Title: Fake Lamps or not?
Post by: Giarrese on March 30, 2024, 09:52:26 PM
Good evening, I purchased these lamps on Catawiki. I would like help. Are they real or fake? Tank you very much for helping me.

Hopefully someone provides insight. Most antiquities on Catawiki run the gamut between questionable and laughable.

This question is in the wrong section.
Anyway.....

The first lamp I'm unsure about.
The second is a genuine one , Diana with her bow, which is the basis of a well known fake.See photo.

Lots of very useful information about fake lamps here:

I have taken the image here from that great website.

Thanks for the reply and sorry if I posted in the wrong section (which is the correct one?)
You said: "The first lamp I'm unsure about" but what if you have to give a definitive opinion? The subject represented is a satyr playing a musical instrument. I attach a lamp where the subject is clearer. Thanks again

Hello again,
Yes, this one is genuine too. Probably 2nd-3rd century.
I see you posted these questions to the io group also.
If you can get an opinion there from David K that would be great as he is as knowlegeable about ancient oil lamps as anyone can be!

Dear jerry I got a reply from David K as you can see  here https://groups.io/g/AncientArtifacts. He has no doubts about the authenticity of the lamps. Tank you for all.
