Title: La Tène I fibula: real or fake?
Post by: sDuncan on July 15, 2025, 12:52:56 AM
Hi y'all,
I recently took a gamble and ordered this off eBay. Listed as a La Tène I fibula from the Black Sea area, it's small - just over 2", has a good weight, and is not magnetic. The peculiar black patina with a subtle green tint, along with the smooth condition of the spring coil, are giving me some doubts, though. The seller has ignored my messages about provenance. I have a hard time imagining someone going through the trouble of making a small fake like this, but I've been surprised before.

What are your thoughts?

Hi,
Looks perfectly OK to me.

It does look shiny, the surface leads me to think maybe polished or waxed.
