Four men to appear in Crown Court later this year for trial of dealing in tainted cultural artefacts
Four men have today (31 October) appeared at Hereford Magistrates Court, having been summonsed for dealing in tainted cultural objects.
The matter has been referred to the Crown Court.

The four men are:
George Powell aged 37 of Coulson Close, Pill, Newport.
Layton Davies aged 50 of Cardiff Road, Pontypridd, Mid Glamorgan.
Paul Wells aged 59 of Newport Road, Rummney, Cardiff.
Simon Wicks aged 56 of Hawks Road, Hailsham, East Sussex.

A collection of Anglo-Saxon and Viking crown treasure artefacts were found in a village north of Leominster, in Herefordshire.
The artefacts, found in 2015, included both gold and silver coins, a gold ring, a gold arm bracelet and a crystal sphere, together with silver ingots, which were discovered by metal detectorists.
It is the legal responsibility of the finder of any precious metal objects that are over 300 years old to report them to the local coroner as possible treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).
This complex investigation has been conducted with the assistance of multiple agencies including both local and national archaeological authorities and experts from the British Museum.

If found guilty they could face a maximum prison sentence of seven years as well as a fine under the Dealing in Cultural Objects Offences Act 2003.

Seeing he has sold over 3000 things (no doubt 99.99% being fakes) it is surprising how few negative feedbacks he has.

This is the system eBay offers – and bad sellers make sure they use it!

UPDATE ON COURT CASE

"Four people have been convicted over the theft of £3 million of Viking treasure which could unlock secrets to the early days of a united England.
A trove of 300 coins and rare pieces of jewellery from the 9th century AD were sold to private collectors before historians and museum experts could glean the history from the find.
Probably buried by the retreating Vikings, the cache was dug up 1,100 years later by metal detectorists George Powell, 38, and Layton Davies, 51, on Herefordshire farmland, in 2015.
The pair have now been convicted at Worcester Crown Court of stealing the find, illegally concealing it from the authorities and then selling off coins to private collectors.
A jury also found two other men, 60-year-old Paul Wells and Simon Wicks, 57, guilty of conspiring to conceal the hoard.
Wicks was also found guilty of helping sell off the coins for cash."

More update>>>>>>

George Powell and Layton Davies uncovered about 300 coins in a field in Eye, near Leominster, Herefordshire, in 2015, but did not declare the treasure, instead selling it to dealers.

They were convicted of theft and concealing their find, with Powell, 38, jailed for 10 years and Layton, 51, for eight-and-a-half.

Sentencing, Judge Nicholas Cartwright said they had "cheated" the public.

Coin seller Simon Wicks, 56, was also convicted on the concealment charge and jailed for five years.

I would have preferred himto go to jail for his eBay fraud!!

A fourth defendant, Paul Wells, 60, also convicted of concealing the find - who became unwell during Thursday's hearing - will be sentenced on 23 December.
