Last post by Giarrese - April 09, 2024, 12:52:58 PM
A few years ago I bought these rings. The seller indicated the period as the Crusades. Are they genuine? Can anyone give me some more information? Tank you

I stil see him with his usual name there, but as you say, far fewer things on offer.
All his usual rubbish.

Is this new? vendor on abay related to Mike Davis of ANTIQUES AND ARTEFACTS UK fame. I note that his shop went empty around the end of March with 2500+/- objects and he just reopened on the 6th of April with 53 objects all at very low prices, this new shop 'ancientantiques92, is full of objects that look like the expensive ones that were on the antiques and artifacts uk

Quote from: Jerry F on March 31, 2024, 09:40:27 PMHello again,
Yes, this one is genuine too. Probably 2nd-3rd century.
I see you posted these questions to the io group also.
If you can get an opinion there from David K that would be great as he is as knowlegeable about ancient oil lamps as anyone can be!
Jerry
Dear jerry I got a reply from David K as you can see  here https://groups.io/g/AncientArtifacts. He has no doubts about the authenticity of the lamps. Tank you for all.

Thanks for the reply and sorry if I posted in the wrong section (which is the correct one?)
You said: "The first lamp I'm unsure about" but what if you have to give a definitive opinion? The subject represented is a satyr playing a musical instrument. I attach a lamp where the subject is clearer. Thanks again

This question is in the wrong section.
Anyway.....

The first lamp I'm unsure about.
The second is a genuine one , Diana with her bow, which is the basis of a well known fake.See photo.

Lots of very useful information about fake lamps here:

I have taken the image here from that great website.

Hopefully someone provides insight. Most antiquities on Catawiki run the gamut between questionable and laughable.
